Spartanburg County started making cloth on the Tyger River in 1816, and by the 1920s the name for this place was Textile Town. That industry never left, it changed materials: Milliken runs its headquarters and research campus in the city, Toray spins aerospace carbon fiber off Highway 290, and the newest layer is automotive. The largest BMW Group plant in the world sits at Greer, and the supplier corridor behind it runs down I-85 and 290 through Duncan and Moore, dozens of tier one plants deep, axle assembly and interiors and excavator lines sharing the same exits. Michelin has cured heavy truck tires here since 1978, and the Woodruff battery plant starts series production in December 2026, fifteen miles up the road.
